And it's making me sad. Mine and my wife's really are great cars. VW just isn't marketing them right at all. 2015 has a Classic edition, they've had an R-Line for a while now too. These are all things that could be used to get people interested again. I think even more importantly, there's always the potential for a Herbie edition. They just have to take a break from making exclusively Golf commercials.

It's because people still want old Beetles.
What they need to do is sell a cheap, RR air-cooled Beetle with plenty of option parts.

If the beetle gets canceled, I'm trading in the GLI for an R-line immediately. debt be damned, I love the bug, and actually regret not getting one sometimes...

IDK, the Beetle just seems kind of pointless to me. Other than looks (which the Jetta wins in my book), why go Beetle over Jetta?

They sold millions of them. They're out there. People don't give the new ones enough credit.

I love GLIs. But I wouldn't trade my big for the world. And they discontinued Reef Blue after 2014. So my car will be a 1 year combination. Future collector car maybe :)

Completely different interior and feel about the car. Instead of the standard VW interior that is shared between every other model they Make, you get one off seating, a cool minimalist center console, and a color keyed dash. And don't forget the interior lighting with 3 possible color choices.

I can appreciate that. I guess what I'm really getting at is why offer both cars? They ought to just tone the Beetle's looks way down and just replace both cars with a sort of cross between the two.

IIRC, air cooled engines can't meet modern emissions regulations. But, RR packaging does offer a lot of advantages in city cars. VW themselves came very close to making the Up Exclamation Point rear engine, but realized that would have required too much unique engineering to be economical.

I kind of wanted there to be a New Beetle racing series. I know they're not sports cars, but when you've got an iconic name on a quirky car, it couldn't hurt. Then again, I also wanted there to be a racing series for the Grumman LLV.

Among the fastest street vehicles I have seen was a guy in a new Beetle Turbo just wail on it on a highway on ramp. Thing took off like a bat out of hell. And since I'm still enjoying my 2.slow 2000 New Beetle (just passed 100k last month), I've been eyeballing the new models because of the styling and the speed options (but it would no longer be a case of slow car fast, I could actually get in trouble with a brand new model Turbo or R).

Well the Jetta is currently only offered as a 4 door sedan and the Beetle as a 3 door hatch.

The 2.slow will run forever. Good choice. And the great part about the new ones is that rather you get a base model of an R, you'll get a turbo engine. Now that the base engine is a downsized version of the 2.0T, you can't go wrong either way!

They have a Jetta TDI Cup series already. I see no reason why this could the switches over. A Beetle TDI series would be phenomenal.

Exactly. Any time a carmaker has a product that seems otherwise pointless, they should just send it racing.
<3,500 lbs curb weight - road racing
>3,500 lbs curb weight - dakar
If the car is over 3,500 lbs and not remotely adaptable for epic transcontinental off road racing, we'll assume it has a really good reason for being in the automaker's line-up and isn't destined for the chopping block just yet.
